The lifeless body of 3 year old Aylan Kurdi washed ashore near the Turkish city of Bodrum on September 3, 2015 after the 15 foot boat in which his family was fleeing the violence in Syria, capsized. The boat was headed to the Greek island of Kos in the darkness of night when it capsized in rough seas. Aylan’s mother Rehan and brother Galip also met the same fate. Only the father Abdullah survived.
This story has been repeated far too often. With Aylan, it now has a haunting illustration: the limp body of a 3 year old child being gently carried up the beach.
Thousands of refugees have perished, both on land and in the sea, attempting to flee violence and poverty in their own countries. The European Union States are being overwhelmed by the flood of immigrants coming into them from Africa, Lybia, Syria and other war torn Middle Eastern countries. The European Union leaders are in discussions to formulate a plan to deal with the crisis.
